The job of our hygienist’s is to professionally clean and polish your teeth (this is sometimes called ‘scaling and polishing’). Their job also involves educating patients about the best ways to help keep their teeth plaque free.
Combining regular hygienist appointments with your own home care is the best way to maintain a healthy mouth, keep your teeth strong and give you fresher breath. Neglecting your gums can lead to poor gum health, which can cause heart problems later on in life.
Hygienist training is focused on preventing gum disease and tooth decay by removing deposits of tartar that build up on the teeth. By teaching you how to prevent it collecting on your teeth in the future, you will be able to slow the process of gum disease.
Booking hygienist appointments for your children will help keep their teeth clean and help to educate them on the best way to brush.
A great way to reduce tooth decay is to limit the amount of sugar in your diet, as well as the amount of times you eat throughout the day.
Our hygienists at Charnwood Dental Centre also offer a stain removal system.
New restrictions and regulations have required us to assess and review our protocols, and have resulted in us implementing a new Dental Hygiene appointment and treatment structure to enable us to continue to provide a high standard of care, in a safe environment for our staff and patients.
Your Dentist may advise you to book an appointment with the Hygienist, or you can book independently without seeing the Dentist.
Our Hygienists and Therapist key aim is to treat and prevent Gum Disease, which is now one of the leading causes of tooth loss in adults. By including regular professional tooth cleaning, alongside your normal oral hygiene routine, you can help to prevent gum disease and tooth decay.
During your appointment, your gum health and oral hygiene will be examined, followed by scaling, the removal of harmful plaque and tartar (calcified plaque) from your teeth, using either specialised hand scaling instruments or a mechanical ultrasonic using water. Your teeth will also be polished to remove surface stains, soft deposits and smooth rough surfaces.
A full mouth scale using specialist hand scaling instruments and polish
Suitable for patients with good oral hygiene, mild staining, mild tartar deposits, sensitive teeth and no presence of gum disease.
A full mouth mechanical scale and polish.
Ultrasonic scalers use ultrasound to remove tartar deposits from your teeth more effectively. They work using high vibrational energy and have water to flush the area and produce bubbles to disrupt harmful bacteria associated with gum disease.
Recommended for patients with heavy tartar deposits, heavy stain, inflamed /bleeding gums, heavily restored teeth (fillings/crowns/bridges), and the presence of gum disease.
Full mouth Ultrasonic Scale, Airflow and Polish
Airflow is a treatment that removes persistent stains on your teeth using a combination of water, compressed air and fine powder particles.
